What is the first rule of boost control?
Ensure you have an over-boost cut-out. This safety feature is built into all factory, aftermarket and programmable ECUs. Make sure it is set at a sensible and reasonable limit. Increasing the boost will put more load on your engine, and there is another tune-related factory you must always consider. If in any doubt, speak with a professional tuner/calibrator.
Can I use this on any turbocharged engine?
External Wastegates are used on vehicles fitted with turbochargers that do not have an internal wastegate actuator. In most instances, external wastegates are custom-fitted items and require modifications to the factory exhaust manifold or a custom specifically manufactured manifold to suit an external wastegate.
What is a GenV Wastegate?
A GenV Wastegate is a 5th Generation External Wastegate from Turbosmart. Turbosmart released the GenV range at the SEMA Show in 2017 and used several features never before seen on a wastegate, including rotating actuator housing, ceramic isolators, multi-angle machined valve seats and interchangeable actuator housings.
Do I have to use the liquid cooling ports?
No. The GenV External Wastegate boasts a number of design features, which means it can tolerate higher temperatures for longer than its peers. The liquid cooling is there in case you wish to use it, or are one of the few who need to.
Why Does the Actuator Housing Rotate?
So you can route your reference hoses any way you like. The GenV external wastegate range is designed with an infinitely clock-able actuator housing so that the shortest, most convenient, and most suitable (temperature, etc.) route can be set up for the reference lines.
How do I change the springs?
You will need the locking collar tool supplied in the box, and you will also need to apply physical force to the top cap of the actuator. Applying force counteracts the preload applied with these assembled in the diaphragm and is a product design feature. Attempting to unlock the collar without this force will likely damage the collar and the actuator.
What size are the reference ports?
1/8NPT. Both the liquid cooling and the boost control reference ports are 1/8NPT. The GenV External Wastegates are delivered with a full hose tail and blanking fitting kit, which will get you going; you’re welcome to use adaptors for AN or push lock fittings for more advanced installs.
This is ‘X’ psi, but I want to run a different boost than that – Which gate should I get?
The pressure rating in the description of a GenV external wastegate is the base mechanical pressure, and we include all other springs in the box. You have base mechanical spring options from 3psi up to 26psi. Note, however, that this is just the lowest the gate can be set for, and with manipulation of the reference signal via a boost controller, you can generally achieve 2-3X the base pressure.
